Road Tripping to Paris in the Middle of the Night
A Trip to Paris
Paris is one of the most famous places in the world. When people think of going to Europe, Paris is usually the number one place that pops up in their head.
That’s why we were so confused as to why we never made a trip out to Paris in our entire first year living in Europe. Especially since it was only about three and a half to four hours away!
Well, we finally went, and this is how it happened.
How Did We Get There?
So the story behind Paris was kind of funny.
It all started with someone visiting one of our closest friends. They were traveling around together and took a week or two off from work to do so. He was always talking about her, so we were excited to finally meet her. However, they were going from country to country, so there was no chance to meet her.
Well, on the last night before she went back to the States, one of my other friends invited all of us to his room hoping that that would make it easier for us to meet her. It was, everyone showed up, and we were all eating and having wine. At this point it was around 1am. She had to be at the train station around 5am.
I had just returned from a month long trip back to the United States to visit family, so we had a lot of catching up to do, and none of us really had the intention of going to bed that night. Well, the topic of where we wanted to go next came up, and I mentioned Paris. We all agreed that it was wild how we still haven’t made a trip there yet. That’s when my friend whose room we were in just said, “You know what, let’s go today.”
We looked at him like he was crazy, but he was 100% serious. We agreed to meet back up at 4:30am, so we could drop my friend’s friend off at the train station, then head over to Paris.
I went home and didn’t sleep. I was tired, but after my Salzburg experience, I was afraid of sleeping through my alarm again.
I played video games for a bit, then showered and got everything around, so it wasn’t too hard to stay awake.
The rest of my friends slept for a couple hours, but we all met back up at 4:30 like we said, then we hit the road.
After dropping off our buddy’s friend at the train station, we embarked on the road trip to Paris. We arrived around 10am because we stopped for a bit to eat and stuff.
What Did We Do There?
Somehow, we found some really good parking pretty close to the Eiffel Tower. I don’t know how, and I don’t know why we got so lucky, and I’m not asking questions.
Once we parked, we walked around a bit, taking it all in, trying to ignore how tired we were.
Around 11, we went for lunch. We liked trying new food whenever we traveled, so at the restaurant we chose, I got some escargot. I remember hearing it in a Biggie Smalls song, which was all the more reason I wanted to try it!
I was incredibly scared to eat it. I have no idea why, I’ve been eating clams and other seafood for as long as I can remember, so this really shouldn’t have been that much different. Either way, I eventually forced myself to eat the first one, and it wasn’t so bad. I was more afraid of them still being alive over anything else.
I finished them off, I was proud of myself for trying at the very least!
After that whole fiasco, we made our way towards the Eiffel Tower, but not before my friend had to stop for macarons. He was always stopping for either macarons or ice-cream.
We eventually did make it to the Eiffel Tower, it was easy to find considering it was taller than everything, but it was hard to pass up on all the stores and goodies we saw along the way. There was a super long line for the elevator to the top of the Tower, but almost no line for the staircase to the top.
Being that this was only a day trip, we didn’t have much time, plus, we felt climbing would be a better overall experience.
Well, it was an experience all right. And as I mentioned earlier, the Eiffel Tower is very tall. That means there are a lot of stairs.
We were absolutely gassed by the time we made it to the top, and I half joked that that would be enough leg day to last me a lifetime. Un-ironically, that really was the last time I did leg day.
The views were well worth it though, and it’s an experience I know I’ll never forget.
I can’t remember how we got down, which most likely means we took the elevator down. Without rest, we started walking around again finding other places to see.
We came across the Louvre, however, we didn’t go in. We enjoyed the fountains and beautiful pyramid that is hosted in the Louvre Palace Courtyard.
We took our generic tourist pictures and headed for our last destination: the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel.
The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is huge, but it is relatively new, having been built in 1808. It was made to honor Napoleon’s victories. The crazy thing is that the Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile is about twice the size of the Arc we saw.
After a good day in Milan, we headed back to our Airbnb in Venice, got a good night’s rest, and headed out in the morning.
Overall, it was a trip that was well worth it. If we had more time there, we would have loved to explore more around the area.
